Australia played host to Oman in a crucial Group B match in the final round of the Asian World Cup qualifiers at Stadium Australia in Sydney on Tuesday.

Socceroos coach Holger Osieck would have been hoping to pick up all three points to consolidate their second spot in the group, but they made the worst possible start.

Abdul Aziz, who scored a hat-trick against Haiti in a friendly last week smashed the away into the lead from a tight angle to stun the Sydney crowd.

Oman carried the lead into the break, and doubled their lead just three minutes into the second half.

A quickly taken free kick saw Eid Al Farsi fire a low cross into the area that Australian midfielder Mile Jedinak deflected into his own goal.

The Crystal Palace midfielder who has enjoyed such a strong season so far in the Championship, looked like he wanted the ground to swallow him up as Australia looked to be heading for an embrassing home defeat.

But just minutes later the Socceroos were right back in the match. A trademark header from a corner by Tim Cahill reduced the deficit and the comeback was on.

And the former Everton man Cahill had a great opportunity to equalise for his team soon after, but he mis-hit his close range rebound shot, following a looping defelcted shot crashing down off the bar and post.

But as time ticked down Aston Villa midfielder Brett Holman found the all important equaliser. A powerful low 25 yard showed squirmed under the body of Wigan Athletic stopper Ali Al Habsi's, to break Oman hearts with just five minutes left on the clock.

The match ended 2-2 leaving both Australia, with a game in hand, and Oman tied at six points.
